The study was funded by Pfizer.
According to a Pfizer press release, the study was conducted by researchers at the University of Liverpool.
A spokesman for Pfizer, Andrew Freeman said: "The findings from this study support the use of Viagra in the UK and the continued growth of counterfeit drugs."
However, he added: "The findings come from a phase 3 study in France and a phase 2 study in Spain that did not find Viagra as an option for patients."
Pfizer said it had suspended sales of Viagra after the study was stopped.
